One resident in a small neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee noticed that a severely emaciated dog was living alone inside a fenced yard. He tried looking for the pup’s owner, but a neighbor living close by told him that no one has been living in the house for the past three months. He was shocked by this revelation because it meant that the dog has probably not eaten for that period.
The neglected dog looked famished and very weak. His thin frame showed bones jutting out of his skin. So the concerned man called Memphis Animal Services right away. Rescuers arrived and broke in to save the animal. As they were taking the dog to their vehicle, he collapsed twice.
He was then brought to the local shelter.
When the vets examined the dog, which they later found out is named Nino, they couldn’t believe the state that he was in. They said that he had zero fat in him. He went through the worst kind of starvation. It was a miracle that the poor pooch survived that long without nourishment.
If it weren’t for the man who reported his situation, it was likely that he could have perished soon.
The medical team put Nino on a special high-nutrition diet. They fed him regularly, but only in small amounts. They didn’t want to shock his system.
The shelter staff knew that Nino needed more. He will need continuous treatment and a good home where he will be loved. The shelter could not give that to him.
Fortunately, a rescue group named Blues City Animal Rescue came in and offered to take Nino. They vowed to continue his care and find him an ideal forever home. It has been three weeks since he had been rescued, and although he has made good strides with his health, he still had a long way to go.
Nino’s owner, a 27-year-old man named Kellen Jones was later arrested and charged with animal cruelty. He said that he lost his job and couldn’t take care of his dog. He left his home because he was looking for work. He admitted to not making any arrangements so that his pet would be cared for.
